History of #bonghit

Once upon a time there was an EFnet channel named #bongsessions. Along about early 2004, I returned from an extended vacation and tour of rootless debauchery to see what was new on the network, and wound up in #bongsessions. I chatted with some old friends and many new friends, using the nickname zer0bpm, and on April 30th 2004 the channel closed (whoever owned the botnet made it impossible to join on purpose, it was not a takeover).
I like to play with bots. I had a bot that kept stats, so I knew who all the chatters were, and was ready to invite them to a new channel, but what to name it? One of the bots also had a script called karma, that allowed anyone to increment or decrement the value of anything, with all things starting with a 0 karma. The item with the highest value was 'bonghit' (because of Demonseed), so thats what I called my new channel, and I invited all the chatty friends I had made to it. The first person to join was Nicker. In the early days _2_ helped by providing a strong botnet to hold the new channel, which grew in size to more than 200 people that summer.
Eventually the channel stabilized at about 100 people on average. I changed my nickname to Lily. Many new people came to the channel, and many others left. I travelled the country and the world, and kept my home and friends on EFnet.
The Karma Database grew to over 23,000 items in almost three years, with some scores reaching values of almost 2000 because of a bug in its flood protection. Finally the bug was fixed in January of 2007 along with other improvements. These changes, combined with the age and size of the database, prompted me to start the database over from scratch. This is now the second age of karma.
